Gastroscopy is the examination of the Oesophagus (food pipe), Stomach and the First part of the Small Intestine, Duodenum.
This is used for diagnosis of reflux, gastritis, ulcers, , Helicobacter infection and coeliac disease etc.
Colonoscopy is the examination of the large intestine from the anal canal to the last section of the small intestine (Ileum). This is used for colon cancer surveillance, detection of polyps, diverticular disease, haemorrhoids etc.
Capsule endoscopy is a method used to investigate the diseases of the small bowel. Patient swallows a small pill sized camera which takes images as it travels through the small bowel and converts them to a video. Capsule Endoscopy will soon be available at at our practice at Riverview Endoscopy.
EUS is referred to as internal ultrasound scan. A special endoscope with an ultrasound probe is used for this examination. This is useful in diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, examination of the upper abdominal organs etc.
This is an advanced procedure with a special longer endoscope with an overtube, used for the examination of the small intestine. Currently not available in Hollywood Private Hospital, this is performed at Royal Perth Hospital.
EMR is a specialised endoscopic technique used to remove early malignant lesions from the gastrointestinal tract including complex large polyps in the large bowel.
RFA is a technique used to ablate and eradicate Barrett's Oesopahgus with high grade dysplasia which is a pre-malignant condition. This is performed with either HALO 360 balloon catheter or HALO 90 catheter attached to the endoscope
ERCP is a procedure used to diagnose and treat diseases in the bile duct and the pancreatic duct. The most common use of this procedure is for removal of bile duct stones. This is also used to insert stents in the bile duct to treat jaundice from malignant conditions such as bile duct or pancreatic cancer
ESD is a highly specialised endoscopic technique used to resect complex lesions including early malignancies from the gastrointestinal tract. This method is utilised to remove lesions in an en-bloc fashion. Currently not performed in the private sector, Dr Muwanwella performs ESD at Royal Perth Hospital.
This is a highly specialised endoscopic technique used to treat a condition called Achalasia. This condition leads to difficulty in swallowing and now POEM has largely replaced Laparoscopic Heller's Myotomy which used to treat this condition. Dr Muwanwella performs POEM at Royal Perth Hospital.
