Dr Niroshan Muwanwella MBBS FRACP

Interventional Gastroenterologist, Royal Perth Hospital, PhD Candidate, Curtin University

Dr Niroshan Muwanwella (MBBS, FRACP) is an Interventional Gastroenterologist based at Royal Perth Hospital and Hollywood Private Hospital in Western Australia. He completed his gastroenterology training in Perth before undertaking advanced interventional fellowships at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto—centres renowned for pioneering therapeutic endoscopy.

Dr Muwanwella’s expertise spans the full spectrum of advanced endoscopic interventions, with a particular focus on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and third-space endoscopy. His procedural repertoire includes per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia, cricopharyngeal POEM (C-POEM) for upper oesophageal motility disorders, Zenker’s POEM (Z-POEM) for pharyngeal pouches, and gastric POEM (G-POEM) for gastroparesis. He also performs endoscopic intermuscular dissection for early rectal malignancy, Barrett’s endotherapy with EMR and radiofrequency ablation, and ERCP with cholangioscopy for complex biliary disease.

An active clinician-scientist, Dr Muwanwella is currently pursuing a PhD at Curtin University investigating the optimisation of third-space endoscopy in upper gastrointestinal motility disorders. His research aims to define procedural metrics, refine training paradigms, and improve outcomes for patients undergoing advanced therapeutic endoscopy.

Dr Muwanwella has published extensively in high-impact journals such as Digestive Endoscopy, Surgical Endoscopy, and JGH Open, contributing to the evolving literature on minimally invasive GI techniques. He is also a regular presenter at national and international meetings, including the World Congress of Gastroenterology (AGW) and the ISDE World Congress for Esophageal Diseases.

With a commitment to innovation, education, and patient-centred care, Dr Muwanwella is dedicated to advancing organ-preserving, surgery-sparing endoscopic therapies and training the next generation of endoscopists in these transformative techniques.

Dr Niroshan Muwanwella is the director of Riverview Endoscopy.
